BIM Diary – The story so far

bimdiarytwitter

BIM Diary is now into it’s 3rd year of activity online, sharing BIM events from all over the world. I have been independently running this calendar free of charge since May 2012 and will continue to do so while I feel it is still useful to the community. As a neutral and completely unbiased platform, I am more than happy to add events from individuals, companies, resellers, communities and software vendors – The only criteria is that the event is related to BIM or future technologies in the AEC sector.

Although this calendar is solely updated and maintained by myself – I wouldn’t be able to keep it running without the help from the BIM community.

Users either contact me via email or Twitter (as above) to add their event to the calendar. By simply Tweeting to @BIMDiary with information will allow me to add the event to the diary – I do not have time to keep track of, and hunt down all these events, so the community participation is essential to keep the diary running – Thanks to everyone who inform me of events which aren’t necessarily of any direct benefit to themselves! This is certainly not an ego project or a way to push more traffic to my blog – I have allowed websites such as BIM Crunch, BIM4SMEs and many BIM blogs to embed the calendar on their websites – The more people who benefit from this calendar, the more worthwhile the time spent maintaining it becomes!

It’s always nice to get feedback as above which reassures me that the calendar is useful to the community. @BIMDiary Twitter account has also racked up more than 1000 followers in this short period of time! This ensures that every time an event is added – at least 1000 people are made aware of this.

If you want your event added to the diary don’t hesitate to contact me and I will be happy to add and advertise it as soon as I get the time to do so.  A special thanks goes out to the #ukBIMcrew and especially Shaun Farrell & Matt Mccarter who have been the top contributors to the diary over this period.

You can find BIM Diary here on BIMopedia (under BIM Diary) or directly via www.BIMDiary.com

BIM Diary calendar links

Just a quick post to update everyone about the different .ics links for the BIM Diary. You may have noticed only the UK BIM Diary events have synced to your mobile calendar. If you wish to have the other events added you will have to add the following .ics links below. In my previous post I outlined how to sync the UK BIM Diary with your iPhone, Rob Clark also added information for Desktop and Android sync. Follow the same steps to add the following calendars. Although the vast majority of the events are either taking place in the UK or Online, it is a global calendar, so I am more than happy to add other events as well. As always, contact me directly or Tweet to @BIMDiary to add your event to the calendar.

Sync BIM Diary with your mobile device

EDIT – Rob Clark has written a blog post about syncing the Diary with an Android device & with Outlook Express. Many thanks! View the blog post here.

I was recently asked if it was possible to add the BIM Diary as a live updating calendar on a mobile device. After a little bit of research I came up with this simple solution to sync the BIM Diary with the main calendar app on your iPhone – follow these instructions:

1. Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars

2. Click on Add Account > Other > Add Subscribed Calendar

3. Copy in this address:
https://www.google.com/calendar/ical/benmalone86%40gmail.com/public/basic.ics and click ‘Next’

4. You can leave the ‘Username’ and ‘Password’ fields blank. Review the other settings and click Next

If you have followed these instructions you should now see the UK BIM Diary synced with your iPhone calendar, if you also want to add the Online events listings, you will need to add another calendar using the same method but this time replacing the url with:
https://www.google.com/calendar/ical/3i35bddds19br1ejbqno4jjt4o%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics

Hope this helped – If you have any other problems get in touch and I’ll try and find a solution.

Updates to BIM Diary

ImageBIM Diary has been running now for just over 4 months – over 200 entries have been added to the calendar so far with more added daily. I have updated the option for registration links and information to be accessed through a clickable link rather than having to copy and paste the link into a new browser tab.

I have also set up a BIM Diary account on Twitter, where I retweet events that people are advertising, that are then added to the diary. If you haven’t already, feel free to follow @BIMDiary now. Events can also be added to the calendar by Tweeting with the #BIMDiary hash tag or directly messaging me.

I was also considering an iPhone app for BIMDiary for those checking it on the move, let me know if there is any interest. If you have suggestions or changes you’d like to see implemented get in contact with me and I will see what I can do.

BIM Diary updates

Just a quick blog post to give some information about the recent updates to BIM Diary. First of all, the reason that I have made the calendar, is for the community. With so many events and webinars happening every week I felt it was essential to create a calendar which can give BIM’ers around the world the chance to have an overview about what is currently going on.

I feel it is important that the calendar has been made by an individual / community, rather than a company whos main interests usually lie within their own products rather than serving the BIM community as a whole with an unbiased, and hopefully comprehensive guide of all BIM related events.

BIM Diary updates:

  • BIM Diary has now moved to http://www.BIMDiary.com
  • Online events are displayed in UK time (GMT)
  • Events can now be filtered by location: UK, USA, Asia, Oceania and Europe
  • Colours used to differentiate online and offline events

More to come over the next month, please continue to support and notify me of new events if you would like them added to the list.

BIM Diary launches

I have just launched a new BIM events calendar called BIM Diary as a new section of this website. This calendar will contain information about all upcoming events, online or offline in the BIM community. My main motivation for doing this was due to missing out on certain events which I didn’t know were taking place, but also as a overal reference for anyone who wants an updated overview of upcoming events.

The idea has been circulating on Twitter for a while so I decided to get the ball rolling. Anyone can add their event to the calendar by either sharing the information on Twitter and tagging it with #BIMDiary or by contacting me directly and asking for me to add the event. I will do my best to update the calendar daily, so it should therefore remain active and up to date. Let me know if there are any upcoming events which I have missed.Image
